Pound that 40!

Yesterday my friend shared the facebook page for Bobby Joe Ebola and the Children Macnuggits and I listened to all the music on they had to offer on their soundcloud. The band has crude joke, absurdity, and all other kinds of humor in their lyrics. I shared it with a few friends and we all agree the band is pretty damn excellent, despite sounding like excrement. Check out this track, 'Life is Excellent' along with is ridiculous video! They have tons of music and seem to put on a great live show as far as I can tell from youtube videos, so be sure to check out some other stuff too. I really like this song 'Freaky Baby' too, a nice little rap song.

These Just In

The search is over today for people who have been tirelessly figuring out the puzzle that has surrounded the mysterious "Record Store Day Incident" involving Boards of Canada. Someone cracked the code today, and entered it at http://cosecha-transmisiones.com/ which http://www.boardsofcanada.com/ is forwarding to right now and found this video (unfortunately not really a song from them per say), followed by a link to Bleep, where Tomorrow's Harvest can be pre-ordered on vinyl or cd. Each release comes with a download code to obtain mp3's of the album as well. The new album is due out June 10th. I'm pretty stoked on this; it will be my first BoC vinyl I will own!

Also today, the wait isn't quite over for people who've been excited about the new Empire of the Sun album, Ice on the Dune, which is still due out in June, but EotS released a video today, for the track 'Alive.' As per the usual Empire of the Sun style video, it's super-epic // sci-fi // futuristic awesomeness. Definitely a nice fun video to tide us over until the album drops in a little over a month and a half! Check out 'Alive' below, and look out for the album June 14th.

Favorite of the Favorites.

Lately I've been really into this series of compilations called Late Night Tales. The Late Night Tales (previously known as Another Late Night) albums are compiled and mixed by different guest musicians who are asked "to compile an album of their favorite music that inspired them to make music their profession - their favorite of the favorites". With the exception of a few, each album contains a cover track performed by the artist/group who made the compilation/mix, and one spoken word track at the end of the disc. Almost all albums are named after the musicians/bands that compiled them except: Music for Pleasure which was mixed by Tom Findlay of Groove Armada, and Shrigley Forced To Speak With Others which is and entire album full of spoken word tracks by David Shrigley. Two spin off albums were also made, At the Movies, which is a compilation of songs from movies, and The Cover Versions, which features a selection of the cover songs that have been made throughout the course of the series. After Dark, another spin off is due out in May of 2013. A number of the musicians/bands/dj's that have worked on the series are pretty popular artists including,

Fila Brazillia - Zero 7 - Groove Armada - Nightmares on Wax - Jamiroquai - Four Tet - The Flaming Lips - Belle & Sebastian - Air - Nouvelle Vague - Fatboy Slim - Matt Helders (of the Arctic Monkeys) - Cinematic Orchestra - Snow Patrol - Trentemøller - MGMT - Metronomy

Groove Armada has curated two of the mixes, three if you count the one Tom Findlay did himself without the other half of the duo, Andy Cato. Belle & Sebastian have also mixed two of the Late Night Tales compilations. Late Night Tales are typically a chilled out, downtempo mix of jazz, electronic, soul, funk, and disco and each has a wide variety of musicians featured on them. So go ahead and check them out sometime. More information on the compilation series and info on upcoming releases can be found at the Late Night Tales website.

Purple

Tonight I was watching random videos on Vimeo, just kind of killing time and ran across this video from Hiatus for the track 'We Can Be Ghosts Now' featuring Shura. It's a great stop-motion video with a cute little love-storyline. The video tells the tale of two lovers separated by society. The track is from Hiatus' forthcoming sophomore album, Parklands, due out May 13th. Super stoked to have found this artist. I just snagged his 2010 album, Ghost Notes and I'm really enjoying it. Lots of downtempo/chillout/dubstep, looking forward to the new album!

Vampire Buscemi?

What is this? Seriously. I just don't know what to say. And there's a whole bunch of them. They're just so... awkward.

I want to rave in a cave!

Late last night Crystal Fighters released their new video for the song 'You & I' off their forthcoming sophomore album Cave Rave, which is due May 27th. The UK group has a pretty distinctive sound. One member of the band said "we consider ourselves to be a mixture of folk, electro, punk, techno, dubstep and Spanish pop. We are kind of like the sound that would be created if The Velvet Underground and The Gipsy Kings were to travel back in time to the Pyrenees, 1980, and make a record with Skream, Madlib and Luciano on production." That's quite the amalgamation of sounds! Crystal Fighters have a number of other videos too, which you can find on their youtube channel. This video is kinda cheesy, but I think the band is still young and probably doesn't have a lot of money to be spending on videos yet. At least check it out for the surprise ending! Here's 'You & I."

Bubbleship

Here's a little 10 minute clip on the process of making the music and sounds for the new movie Oblivion in theaters now. The video features director Joseph Kosinski, music composer Joseph Trapanese, M83′s Anthony Gonzalez, and re-recording mixers Gary Rizzo and Juan Peralta. Over the course of the video they talk about the importance of sound and music in film, and give us some information on how they achieved some of the interesting features they produced! The soundtrack is amazing, and was released by Back Lot Music on April 9th. It definitely has an M83 feel to it, but isn't quite the same. I'm not saying it's bad by any means though, it's an amazing album! You can stream it here. I've heard great things about the movie as well, which is in theaters now. I haven't seen it yet, but I plan on it!

The Dream is Gone.

Today, Bonobo released this video for 'First Fires' featuring Grey Reverend, the first track on the recently released album The North Borders. The new video is a bit of a trip, lots of reminiscent-love feel to it. Also today, I just confirmed that I will be attending the sold out Bonobo show at the Belly Up in Solana Beach next month on the 6th. Super stoked for this. El Ten Eleven will be the supporting act, and I've seen neither of the bands, but they are both excellent groups who put on excellent live shows! Anyway, check out 'First Fires' below, and check out the full album The North Borders if you still haven't!

It's Happening!

Late last night (yeah, I was up till 4am) I stumbled upon a bit of a mystery. As many of you know yesterday was Record Store Day. A day in which record stores across the world hold special events, and special limited edition records are released for sale. I picked up the Foals rsd release and the Cut Copy rsd release, and also found excellent condition copies of Electric Light Orchestra's Out of the Blue, and the soundtrack for 2001: A Space Odyssey. Music collectors and lovers anticipate this day each year, and go through the list of each release that will be hitting the shelves. This year, however, one release wasn't on Record Store Day's list of releases. That release was from Warp Records, a short recording by Boards of Canada. Now, at first this may not seem like a big deal, but BoC has a pretty massive cult following, and the details behind this release are a bit of a mystery. Boards of Canada haven't released an album since 2005's The Campfire Headphase. Yesterday was also the 15th anniversary of Boards of Canada's Music Has The Right To Children
The record is single sided, and has a roughly 20 second clip of a very boards-of-canada-ey voice with synth backing. Then a digitized voice saying a six digit number once, and then the recording cuts out. On the front of the record "Boards of Canada" is written and beneath that a series of -'s, /'s, and X's, are arranged as follows "------ / ------ / ------ / XXXXXX / ------ / ------"
What people are putting together is that this is possibly 1 of 6 releases, and that all of them put together may equal a whole song. Also the numbers when put together from all releases may give us some information about a new album. So now we have to wait. People are putting this information up across the internets everywhere. So, hopefully all this means a new BoC record soon! Here is a video of the clip being played:
Articles/Information on the subject
***2020k also has a post about it, which is being updated pretty regularly with any new evidence/findings that are coming out.

Truth in Music

I was just introduced to Mister Lies a couple weeks ago when I attended the Memory Waves Festival. He was one of many artists on the lineup I had never heard of. Later that week I found out he was going to be playing a show here in San Diego, and I actually won tickets to the show, which had xxyyxx headlining, with Mister Lies as the opening act. I unfortunately didn't attend, due to prior obligations. Really hope I get the chance to see the both of them again. They're so early in their careers though, that I don't doubt I will. Mister Lies only has one album as of yet, Mowgli, which was released just earlier this year. The album features eight tracks of ambient, downtempo, electronica similar to xxyyxx, Giraffage, and Different Sleep. This first video, 'False Astronomy' isn't from the album, it's from the Hidden Neighbors ep, which was released last year. I'm wondering if anyone (a specific friend in particular) will recognize the begining of this track.
From Mowgli, this track, 'Dionysian' has a rather strange video.
I really dig the feel of 'Hounded,' also from Mowgli. I love the way the video speeds up and slows down but has a steady flow despite.

Keep Your Wits About

I've been listening to this album 1 or 2 times a day for the last couple weeks. Really can't get enough of it. Flume's self-titled Flume has a huge variety of sounds. The 2012 album ranges from chillout/chillwave to idm, a touch of hip hop, some bass music and experimental electronica. This is another album I've found this year that wasn't on my radar last year when it was released and should have probably been on my top albums of the year list. 20 year old Australian producer Flume (facebook, soundcloud) got his first taste for producing at age 13 from the most unlikely of places - a music production program he found in a cereal box. Can you say fate? I don't recall getting anything even close to that cool in a cereal box. (Insert jokes about how lame America is here.) At any rate, Flume has three videos so far, this first, features an excellent vocalist, also from Australia, named Chet Faker (facebook, soundcloud). Chet has one ep, Thinking in Textures, but has worked with numerous artists. Check out 'Let Alone' below.

The next track, 'Sleepless,' features female vocalist Jezzabell Doran (facebook, soundcloud).

The third track, 'More Than You Thought' has a mysterious and ancient feel to it. The video, mysterious as well, features what's been hailed as "The Infinity Prism" which just happens to be the name of Flume's current tour. Unfortunately, as of now, that tour will not be making it to the states. I'd love to see him at some point though! Check out the video below!

I Hear it Calling Me!

Really digging this new single and video that Basement Jaxx released earlier this week on Tuesday. The video is super fun, as is the song. I love it's playfulness and jungle/nature/wilderness feel, and any song that sings about getting naked is usually cool in my book. The psychedelicness of the video is great with it's repetitiveness simulating fractals and it's not-too-intrusive flashiness  and I absolutely love all the different animal hats and costumes the dancers don. I'm also super excited to see what the album cover of their new album will be, and the single covers as well. Basement Jaxx have all sorts of fun album art. So yeah, new song and video, check it out now. Look for the new album later this year. There's still no release date or title to the album, but I'll definitely let you all know!

Visual and Auditory Art Merge

As you probably know, Coachella kicked off last weekend, and is about to hold their second weekend. I've scoured many a video and saw a lot of amazing things, but one performance stood out for me. How To Destroy Angels_ played a fantastic show, and had an amazing stage set-up. It blended the lines of lights/set-up and instillation art. In this video, HTDA's artistic director Rob Sheridan, who has been working with bandmate Trent Reznor since 1999, is now not only considered a member of the band, and not just the artistic director, but actually controlling visual effects in real time as the band plays from on stage. In this video, hosted on the official Coachella youtube channel, Rob Sheridan talks about their onstage spectacle.

Real Copyright Issues

Before I start, a disclaimer. I highly encourage you all to not go listen to the Will.I.Am songs in question unless you are listening to them from a source you know he won't make any money from. There is one video I have listed but it is listed because the video, and not just the audio is questionable, plus the video isn't on his youtube channel to begin with.

Musician Will.I.Am is caught in another controversy regarding him stealing music from another artist. Now, I understand that sometimes a song will sound similar to another song, and sometimes it may happen by pure chance, but in Will.I.Am's case this has happened multiple times, and for some of these songs, it's not just a similarity, it's a blatant rip off. Even far before Will.I.Am was doing his solo career, he was accused of musical plagiarism when he was a member of and "making" music for the Black Eyed Peas. In this first instance, I can't really catch it; having one word in common isn't anything really, though the artist, Pheonix Phenom claims the music was stolen as well. Do you hear it?
Later, the Black Eyed Peas were again accused by English breakbeat producer Adam Freeland for blatantly stealing his track 'Mancry' from the album Cope for use in the Black Eyed Peas track 'Party All the Time' from their album The E.N.D. A settlement was reached and BEP's lawyer(s) were quoted as having said,

"The band reacted to an accusation of plagiarism, with Party All The Time said to have the beginning of Man Cry. They explained that this was not a case of plagiarism, in that the band’s manager had offered them a beat and it was a case of working together. “It was a lack of finalising legalities before releasing the record, clearance was not done and that was what it was about.”

But do you think that was actually the case, or do you think they just use that excuse after-the-fact? And how many artists out there are getting ripped off and never even realizing it?
And who could forget Will.I.Am's track 'I Got it From My Mama (Remix)' in which the song is easily recognizable as Daft Punk's 'Around the World' and the video is a mixture of Tron-esque imagery and very similar to the style of videos from the album Human After All, which 'Around the World' is from. To which I assume Daft Punk said something like "Look here, bitch, this shit isn't a remix and you're not worthy," and the video never made it to mainstream sources, but can still be found on youtube.
And the most recent case happened today, on the day Will.I.Am released his whole new album #WILLPOWER to youtube. As shown in this video, Will.I.Am's song 'Let's Go' ft. Chris Brown is so clearly 'Rebound' by Arty and Mat Zo that when you play it, the Shazzam application says so! I wonder if this will go to court, or if it will just be another case of "Oh we forgot" or "Oh it was released too early and things hadn't finished up." As of now, all we know is Arty tweeted "They never cleared rights through Anjunabeats, who's only one label, who ownes the rights for "Rebound"." and Anjunabeats tweeted "We are looking into the situation regarding Rebound, but can't reply to each message individually. Thanks for all your support." So we will just have to wait and see what becomes of this.

Can I Get An Amen?

I know a lot of people won't take the time to sit through this, at least not right a way, but I encourage you to do so, the next time you have twenty minutes to spare to learn about the Amen Break, it's use in early hip-hop, then jungle, and drum and bass music, and whether or not it's repeated use by likely hundreds of thousands of musicians by this point is legal or not despite it still being copyrighted and not in public domain.
In 2004 Nate Harrison put together an art installation project that consisted of a turntable and pa system, paired up with a pressing he had made with the recording you will find in the youtube video below. There was also paper documents nearby that people could look through while listening to the recording.
"Can I Get An Amen? is an audio installation that unfolds a critical perspective of perhaps the most sampled drum beat in the history of recorded music, the Amen Break. It begins with the pop track Amen Brother by 60's soul band The Winstons, and traces the transformation of their drum solo from its original context as part of a 'B' side vinyl single into its use as a key aural ingredient in contemporary cultural expression. The work attempts to bring into scrutiny the techno-utopian notion that 'information wants to be free'- it questions its effectiveness as a democratizing agent. This as well as other issues are foregrounded through a history of the Amen Break and its peculiar relationship to current copyright law."

Fuck Genres

Red Bull has sponsored a great video series on youtube that has brought together several artists who talk about the emergence of specific trends in music and what we should call them, or discuss if they should even have a name. The H∆SHTAG$ video series is currently 6 videos long, and covers 6 different "genres," their emergence on the internet, and why some people don't like the use of genres or weird subgenres or intergenres. Personally, as many of my friends know, I don't care for genres that much to begin with. I feel like they are alienating and restrictive, and can too quickly become something that they are not. Most people lump a band into one genre, but with several songs on each album by each artist, who is to say all those songs are the same genre? It's music. Like it, love it, or don't. You don't have to like everything you hear, but saying you don't like any dubstep, or you don't listen to any drum & bass, or any genre for that matter is foolish. Don't rule things out because of some made up word that some people think is a good form of categorization. Here's a list of the episodes so far (linked to each on youtube), and Episode 2: Don't Call It #PostDubstep is featured below.

Breaking Up His Naming Tradition

'Around The Block,' the first single from Pretty Lights' new album, A Color Map of the Sun, was released today as well as the accompanying video. The new album will be released July 2, 2013, at Pretty Lights Music, for free, as has been the case with all of his catalog. Talib Kweli lends some help with vocals on the new track, and the video was directed by Anthony Dickenson.
Derek Vincent Smith had this to say about his new album,
"I began work on this album/project/experiment in February of 2011 and spent a year creating my own vinyl collection of everything I needed to produce the album I heard in my head. I spent the next year producing songs with homemade vinyl samples and a big crazy analog synth I built just for this album. It is truly Analog Electronica. It's soulful electro hip-hop that went back in time to learn from the life of its smooth ass grandparents.
Music will always continue to evolve. On A Color Map of the Sun I challenged myself to evolve my own sound and style by looking to the past and paying respect to all the ways in which music can yield immense power; emotionally, kinetically, and as I see it, inspirationally. Basically, I tried to make an album that could make you feel your soul, move your body and maybe even stir up new ideas. I put my whole self into this album and it put itself back into me."
Again, A Color Map of the Sun will be available July 2nd as a free download, or there will also be physical copies of the album available, on vinyl or cd. Several packages are listed on the website for pre-order. So check out the first single, 'Around the Block,' head over to the site and download it for free, and check out the different packages you can purchase, and be sure to come back July 2nd to download the full album!

If Georgia O'Keeffe made music videos...

Iron and Wine's new album  Ghost on Ghost due out April 16th has leaked, and is making some buzz around the internets. Tagging along right behind the leak is the release of the video for 'Joy,' directed by Haley Morris. "The video was made by projecting hand-painted water color animations into stop-motion landscapes," Morris states. It's clear that a lot of time went into this elegant video, and it flows so well with this beautiful track. So here it is, Iron & Wine's 'Joy.'

Glitchy Goodness

How to Destroy Angels_ has been hyping up their live show for quite some time now, though, not really leaving us something to picture. Until now. Today the Coachella youtube account posted this video, a little glimpse into pieces of what the show will display. How to Destroy Angels_'s performance at Coachella will be streamed live on Coachella's youtube page, so all of you who will be attending Couchchella will still be able to catch it this Friday night. Many other acts will be streamed live all Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, so be sure to check in and see what's playing!

β State does Björk

Found this awesome post-rock cover of Björk's 'Unravel' today. I checked out some more of their music, and some of it was good, and some of it was horrible. The San Francisco band features 2 former members of Strata, and will be releasing a deluxe version of their #Friendship EP soon. It will feature this cover, as well as new tracks, and several remixes. This is the first time I've seen someone make a deluxe version of an EP, but whatever gets you sales, right boys? Anyway, check out Beta State's rendition of 'Unravel.'

Memory Waves: A Turntable.fm Music Festival

(All artist names link to their facebook.)
Today I was lucky enough to catch word of a "Music Festival" taking place on turntable.fm, a site in which typically, users take turns playing music for each other. Today however, turntable saw several famous artists take to the site to put on quite the show. Huge names like Ulrich SchnaussTychoCom TruisePolish Ambassador, and Shigeto took the stage as well as many others. A number of the musicians who played I already knew, but a number of them I didn't, and now I have a ton of music I need to check out and artists/djs/bands that I need to delve into more.
Some of the best music from people I hadn't heard of before came from Heathered PearlsSolar FieldsShortcirclesChrome Sparks, and Noble Oak. Other bands who played were BluetechSlugabedDesert DwellersKiloWattsKrusseldorfJacob 2-2,  Selva OscuraCorduroiNocowVaunGhosts, GhostchantHyphaSpectrum Vision, and still others.
Turntable.fm has been around for quite a while now, and I've never seen anything like this being held on the site. It's quite possibly the first "Festival" of it's kind. The attendance was amazing as well. I've been using the site for a couple of years now, and I've never seen so many people in a room before... I don't think until today I'd seen over 200 people in the same room. But the "Chill or Be Chilled" room the festival was held in broke over 1100 users at times. I'm sure a lot of musicians made new fans, and a lot of fans got to hear a ton of great music. Really excited to see if this could become a new fad. It would certainly help out my wallet... "Real" Festivals are expensive!

The Other Cage

Just saw this John Cage piece for the first time. In it, the performers are split into pairs. Each pair controls a radio, one tunes, while the other controls the volume, and turns the pages on the sheet music. The things that come from this mans mind are absolutely incredible. What's your favorite John Cage piece?

Engrish Erectric

Well this album snuck up on me! I had no idea it was coming, and here it is, to be released in just two days on Monday! Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD)'s  English Electric features 12 tracks, and already has 3 videos released for it! The first two videos released are for the songs 'Decimal' and 'Atomic Ranch.' Now, each of these tracks are short (not even two minutes), but great none-the-less. OMD makes up for the shortness of these tracks and videos though, with their third video for their 12th studio recording. The track 'Metroland' is seven and a half minutes long and reminds me of the earlier days of OMD that I loved. Check out their new stuff and pick up their new album April 8th!

Fingertips

A new video released on the Warp Records official youtube channel gives us a brief glimpse of the upcoming Bibio album, Silver Wilkinson, which will be released May 13th. I previously posted the video they released for the track 'À tout à l'heure.' Listening to this album sampler, it's obvious that 'À tout à l'heure' is just the tip of the iceberg that will be Silver Wilkinson, just as each of these quick clips of tracks are just the tip of the iceberg for each track. I'm super excited for this album, and pretty sure that it will surpass his previous works.
Tracklist:
1. The First Daffodils
2. Dye the Water Green
3. Wulf 4. Mirroring All
5. À tout à l'heure
6. Sycamore Silhouetting
7. You

Adventure Blog with Fred, The Hunter Gatherer

Flying Lotus dropped a new track on his Soundcloud that was featured on the Cartoon Network series Adventure Time. The track, titled 'About that time // A glitch is a glitch' is unfortunately short, but awesomely chiptunesy and feels like it should be on the soundtrack for an Adventure Time video game. FlyLo also dropped the episode on mediafire so you can download and check it out for free here!

The Flaming Ivers

*This video is NSFW* The Flaming Lips are releasing a new album, The Terror in just a couple days (April 16th) but as busy and scattered all over the place as they are things are still flowing from other projects. In this video the Lips team up with Bon Iver on the track 'Ashes in the Air' from their 2012 collab album The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends. The video, like most of The Flaming Lips projects is pretty psychedelic and definitely not safe for work. It features some graphic scenes involving nudity, gore (blood, people with their heads opened up and brains removed), and a baby being put into a... well, I'll let you see for yourself. It's pretty gnarly though, I'll tell you that much. Haha.

Last Minute

Daedelus remixes Sister Crayon track 'Meager Leavings' from their forthcoming EP Cynic which is due to be released on the 16th. Really excited for this EP to be released, and pretty stoked that Daedelus remixed a track from them! I didn't realize they were popular enough for them to even come across his field of vision.

Delving Deeper

Travis Stewart, aka Machinedrum, from North Carolina, released a single today 'Clissold VIP'. The video for the track was released the other day on youtube and it's creepy old-looking footage fits quite nicely with the song. When reading through the info in the 'About' section of the video, I found out Machinedrum has other monikers that I didn't know about... so here's to me hunting and gathering some new stuff from him. "He is also known as Syndrone, Tstewart, and Neon Black." Looks like I've got some work to do. Hope it's good! Check out Machinedrum's 'Clissold VIP' below!
