Red Bull has sponsored a great video series on youtube that has brought together several artists who talk about the emergence of specific trends in music and what we should call them, or discuss if they should even have a name. The H∆SHTAG$ video series is currently 6 videos long, and covers 6 different "genres," their emergence on the internet, and why some people don't like the use of genres or weird subgenres or intergenres. Personally, as many of my friends know, I don't care for genres that much to begin with. I feel like they are alienating and restrictive, and can too quickly become something that they are not. Most people lump a band into one genre, but with several songs on each album by each artist, who is to say all those songs are the same genre? It's music. Like it, love it, or don't. You don't have to like everything you hear, but saying you don't like any dubstep, or you don't listen to any drum & bass, or any genre for that matter is foolish. Don't rule things out because of some made up word that some people think is a good form of categorization.
