Favorite of the Favorites.

Lately I've been really into this series of compilations called Late Night Tales. The Late Night Tales (previously known as Another Late Night) albums are compiled and mixed by different guest musicians who are asked "to compile an album of their favorite music that inspired them to make music their profession - their favorite of the favorites". With the exception of a few, each album contains a cover track performed by the artist/group who made the compilation/mix, and one spoken word track at the end of the disc. Almost all albums are named after the musicians/bands that compiled them except: Music for Pleasure which was mixed by Tom Findlay of Groove Armada, and Shrigley Forced To Speak With Others which is and entire album full of spoken word tracks by David Shrigley. Two spin off albums were also made, At the Movies, which is a compilation of songs from movies, and The Cover Versions, which features a selection of the cover songs that have been made throughout the course of the series. After Dark, another spin off is due out in May of 2013. A number of the musicians/bands/dj's that have worked on the series are pretty popular artists including,

Fila Brazillia - Zero 7 - Groove Armada - Nightmares on Wax - Jamiroquai - Four Tet - The Flaming Lips - Belle & Sebastian - Air - Nouvelle Vague - Fatboy Slim - Matt Helders (of the Arctic Monkeys) - Cinematic Orchestra - Snow Patrol - Trentemøller - MGMT - Metronomy

Groove Armada has curated two of the mixes, three if you count the one Tom Findlay did himself without the other half of the duo, Andy Cato. Belle & Sebastian have also mixed two of the Late Night Tales compilations. Late Night Tales are typically a chilled out, downtempo mix of jazz, electronic, soul, funk, and disco and each has a wide variety of musicians featured on them. So go ahead and check them out sometime. More information on the compilation series and info on upcoming releases can be found at the Late Night Tales website.
